Nadezhda (Nadya) Tolokonnikova is an artist, political activist, and founder member of Pussy Riot, a punk rock art collective that gained international attention and support after several members were arrested during a performance at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Tolokonnikova has been awarded The Lennon Ono Peace Grant and is a co-winner of The Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought.
She created the Mordovia office of Zona Prava, a prisoners' rights non-governmental organization, after her release in 2013. She later founded MediaZona, an independent news service that is currently affiliated with The Guardian.
