Joseph J. Ellis was educated at the College of William and Mary and Yale University. He is the author of seven books on American history, the most recent being "His Excellency: George Washington," which was published in 2004 and became an immediate bestseller.

His previous book, "Founding Brothers," won the Pulitzer Prize, while American Sphinx received a National Book Award. Both were also bestsellers. Ellis is generally regarded as one of the leading scholars of the Founding Fathers and one of the most successful "cross-over" historians having managed to straddle the gap between the scholarly world and larger public audiences.
