Rita Dove is an American poet, essayist, and playwright. Dove is the first African American woman to be named Poet Laureate of the United States, a position she held from 1993 to 1995. She is also a Pulitzer Prize winner for her book "Thomas and Beulah," which explores the lives of her grandparents.
