Rita Dove is an American poet, essayist, and playwright. Dove is the first African American woman to be named Poet Laureate of the United States, a position she held from 1993 to 1995. She is also a Pulitzer Prize winner for her book "Thomas and Beulah," which explores the lives of her grandparents.
In addition, Dove has written numerous poetry collections, including "The Yellow House on the Corner" and "Grace Notes," and has also written plays, essays, and a novel. She has been honored with many awards and honors for her work, including the National Humanities Medal, the Wallace Stevens Award, and the Common Wealth Award in Literature.
