About Barbara Means
Barbara Means Biography
Barbara Means is an educational psychologist whose research focuses on how technology may help students gain advanced skills and classrooms and schools be revitalized. She is widely acknowledged as a pioneer in outlining challenges and methods for assessing the implementation and usefulness of technology-assisted educational innovations. She is now heading two studies for the National Scientific Foundation, one on the efficacy of STEM-focused high schools and the other on science learning in California after-school programs. She is also in charge of evaluating the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Next Generation Learning Challenges awards. Other recent work by Means includes assisting in the formulation of the United States' new National Educational Technology Plan (Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology). Means is a member of the National Academy of Engineering/National Research Council Committee on Integrated STEM Education and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association. He served on the National Research Council's Working Committee on Highly Successful Schools or Programs for K12 STEM Education and is currently a member of the National Academy of Engineering/National Research Council Committee on Integrated STEM Education. Earlier in her career, she served on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Developments in the Science of Learning, which published the book How People Learn. Evaluating Educational Technology, Technology, and Education Reform, and Teaching Advanced Skills to At-Risk Students are some of her published works, as are the jointly authored volumes Using Technology Evaluation to Advance Student Learning, The Connected School, and Comparative Studies of How People Think. Means graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.
