Vanessa Ochs Biography

The author of Inventing Jewish Ritual (JPS), winner of the 2007 National Jewish Book Award, is Vanessa L. Ochs. She incorporates Sarah Laughed, The Jewish Dream Book, The Book of Jewish Sacred Practices, and other works into her many novels (altered with Irwin Kula) Safe and Sound: Protecting Your Child In An Unpredictable World and Words on Fire: One Woman's Journey into the Sacred. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded her a Creative Writing Fellowship for her compositions. Dr. Ochs teaches courses in Jewish humanities of religion and deep writing at the University of Virginia's Department of Religious Studies and Jewish Studies Program. Ochs graduated from Tufts University with a B.A. in French and Drama, an M.F.A. in Theater from Sarah Lawrence College, and a Ph.D. in Religious Anthropology from Drew University. working now I'm currently working on two projects that are related to my earlier research on the history of Jewish customs and the study of religion and material culture. The main project is a biography of the Passover Haggadah, which will be part of a series of biographies of important literature that Princeton University Press will publish. The second is a multi-year, multi-site ethnography of American Jewish houses in response to a question I've been pondering for a while: What, in terms of material culture, makes a Jewish home Jewish?
