Following their agreement with Universal Republic Records, Shop Boyz began work on their debut album, Rockstar Mentality, which contained rock-influenced hip-hop. The album's lead track Party Like a Rockstar was released in May 2007 and gained commercial success hitting number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the highest-selling ringtone of 2007. Rockstar Mentality was released on June 19 2007 peaking at #11 on the US Billboard 200 but having a dismal critical and commercial reaction selling fewer than 200000 copies to date. The follow-up song They Like Me did poorly peaking at #98. The group was later dropped by Universal. Up Thru There was released in August 2008 as the debut song from Shop Boyz's unnamed second studio album, which was never published. Despite this the music managed to chart inside the bottom part of US R&B charts. Shop Boyz went on to release the tune Up Thru There on their 2009 mixtape Forever Shop, as well as the joint album Community Service Vol.2 with rapper C-Murder on March 23, 2010, which contained the track. On April 4, 2011, the band self-released an EP titled Back 2 Finish What We Started.
