Rochelle Walensky is an American physician-scientist and infectious disease expert. She is most notable for serving as the 19th Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under President Joe Biden from January 2021 to June 2023. A native of Peabody, Massachusetts, she earned a B.A. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Washington University in St. Louis, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and a Master of Public Health in Clinical Effectiveness from Harvard School of Public Health.

Walensky is revered for her extensive research on HIV/AIDS. She boasts more than 300 publications that delve into cost-effectiveness, HIV testing, and long-term care strategies. Her work has significantly influenced health policies both in the U.S. and globally, notably contributing to increased funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and promoting extensive HIV screening initiatives.
