Willis served as the executive editor of Out magazine and has written for several publications, including The New York Times, Essence, and BuzzFeed. She founded Black Trans Circles, a program that provides support and resources to transgender people of color. In 2017, Willis was awarded the Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Law and Policy by the City of New York.
