Rakesh Sharma is a retired Indian Air Force pilot and cosmonaut who became the first Indian citizen to travel in space. Sharma joined the Indian Air Force in 1970 and became a test pilot. He was selected to be a cosmonaut in the Soviet Union's Intercosmos space program in 1982.
In April 1984, Sharma flew aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft as part of a joint space mission between the Soviet Union and India. During his eight-day mission, he conducted experiments on biomedicine, remote sensing, and materials processing.
