Rakesh Sharma Biography

Rakesh Sharma is a retired Indian Air Force pilot and cosmonaut who became the first Indian citizen to travel in space. Sharma joined the Indian Air Force in 1970 and became a test pilot. He was selected to be a cosmonaut in the Soviet Union's Intercosmos space program in 1982. In April 1984, Sharma flew aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft as part of a joint space mission between the Soviet Union and India. During his eight-day mission, he conducted experiments on biomedicine, remote sensing, and materials processing. He is famously remembered for his conversation with the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, where he famously said, "Saare jahan se achcha Hindustan hamara" (Our India is better than the entire world). After his return from space, Sharma continued to serve in the Indian Air Force until his retirement in 1994. He then pursued a career in the private sector and served on the boards of various companies. In recognition of his contributions to space exploration, he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration, in 1984.
