Lynda M. Applegate Biography

Lynda M. Applegate is the Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration and Head of the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School. Lynda is also the Faculty Chair of the Harvard Business School's Business Owner Portfolio of executive programs, which includes the Owner President Management and Key Executive programs, as well as the recently introduced Global Immersions for Business Owners. A number of targeted executive programs, such as Aligning Strategy to Sales, Families in Business, Launching New Ventures, and Private Equity and Venture Capital, are also featured in the Business Owner Portfolio. Each year, approximately 700 worldwide entrepreneurs and company owners attend these workshops. Lynda has held a number of leadership positions at HBS since joining the faculty over 25 years ago, including acting as the head of Field Based Learning and the MBA program's Cohort Chair. She was the Co-Chair of the Harvard Policy Group on Networked Government Services from 1995 to 2003, as well as a member of the Harvard University Technology Advisory Council. Lynda taught at the University of Michigan, the University of Washington, and the University of Arizona before joining the HBS faculty. Lynda established a succession of business enterprises and had a range of leadership roles in the health care industry during the 1970s, in addition to her academic appointments. Lynda's latest research and writings have focused on the challenges of launching new businesses and driving radical business innovation in the face of considerable industry, technical, capital market, and regulatory upheaval. The second line of study looks at new governance structures that might help companies collaborate more effectively. She is the author of over 350 published case studies, online learning DVDs, and course materials, as well as over 40 papers, books, and book chapters. For her research, teaching, and commitment to the school, Lynda has received several HBS honors. She was recently honored with the Robert F. Greenhill award for her exceptional contributions to Harvard Business School. She has also earned the Berol Award for Research Excellence and the Apgar Award for Innovation in Teaching from Harvard Business School. She has also received several "Best Paper" honors for her academic studies on 21st-century business models, executive team decision-making, and cooperation throughout innovation processes. Lynda is a well-known worldwide consultant who has sat on the boards of both public and private firms. She serves as an advisor and part of an advisory board for both entrepreneurs and senior executives establishing new business initiatives in existing firms. She's also a member of the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council's Board of Trustees, as well as the NASDAQ Industry Advisory Board and the GAO's Executive Council for Information Management and Technology. Lynda has also served as a member of a roundtable panel for President Clinton's Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection and as a policy advisor on a Blue-Ribbon Panel to create a National Research Agenda on the growth of the Network Economy.
