About Justin Hansford

Justin Hansford Biography

In addition to serving as the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center's executive director, Justin Hansford teaches law at Howard University School of Law. Prior to joining Saint Louis University, Professor Hansford held the positions of Associate Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, Democracy Project Fellow at Harvard University, and Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University. He earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and his B.A. from Howard University, where he also founded the Georgetown Journal of Law and Modern Critical Race Perspectives. In addition, Professor Hansford received a Fulbright Scholarship to study Nelson Mandela's legal career and worked as Judge Damon J. Keith's clerk on the Sixth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. Leading authorities on critical racial theory, human rights, law, and social movements may be found in Professor Hansford's work. The acclaimed legal textbook Race, Racism and American Law, which was the first casebook produced exclusively for teaching race-related law courses, will soon release its Seventh Edition, and he is one of its co-authors. At several universities, including Harvard, Georgetown, Fordham, and the University of California at Hastings, his interdisciplinary research has been published in scholarly publications. He also serves on the Stanford Medicine Commission on Justice and Equity, and the National Jurist Magazine named him one of the top eight attorneys for racial justice in 2020. After Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, Missouri, Hansford sought to strengthen the Ferguson neighborhood via community-based legal advocacy. He co-authored the Ferguson to Geneva human rights shadow report and traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, with Mike Brown's family and protestors to speak before the UN. He has testified before the Ferguson Commission, the Missouri Advisory Committee to the United States Civil Rights Commission, the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in his capacity as a policy advisor for post-Ferguson reforms that have been proposed at the local, state, and federal levels.
