Misty Copeland Biography

Misty Copeland took her first ballet class at the age of 13. From there she has gone on to become one of the most well-known and successful ballet dancers of her time. She is considered a prodigy by many, and less than two years after she started she was already winning awards for her work. In 1997 Copeland won the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award as the best dancer in Southern California. That accomplishment garnered the attention of one of the leading classical ballet companies, the American Ballet Theatre. By the year 2000 Misty became only the third African-American soloist and the first in two decades to work for the company. While she has had to overcome the cultural pressure associated with her role, Misty has continued to shine and become an inspiration to a new generation of dancers who will soon be able to travel down the same path she helped pave.
