About Jeffrey Buttle
Jeffrey Buttle Biography
Jeffrey Buttle made his international debut in 2002 when he won the ISU Four Continents Championships against the odds, a performance he repeated in 2004. In his Worlds debut, he finished ninth, earning high accolades for his musicianship and creativity. He won his first World Championship medal in 2005, and he was the leading skater on the Canadian Winter Olympic squad in 2006, winning bronze. In 2008, he won the World Championships gold (the first Canadian male to do so in 11 years), after two solid performances put him on the top step of the podium. “It was a fantastic season to be a part of. “Of course, I'm ecstatic about the World Championships,” he added. “It was frightening at first. It didn't appear to be real. It took me a minute to process the title. After that, I felt as if a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders. You'd think that instead of pressure, I'd be feeling the opposite. On the ice, I'm completely at ease.” There are certain benefits to becoming World Champion off the rink. Buttle attended the Juno Awards (Canada's version of the Grammys), where he walked the red carpet and met singer-songwriter Leslie Fiest. He was a guest on Air Farce Live, Canada's most popular comedy show. With his appearance on The Hour, he made his talk show debut. Buttle began skating at the age of two and began competing at the age of six. Working with Lee Barkell at the world-renowned Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario, and Raphael Arutunian at the Ice Castle International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead, California, he has split his time. At the Toronto Cricket, Skating, and Curling Club, he also works with choreographer David Wilson. He has valued the willingness of all members of his training staff to work together. Buttle is encouraged to explore more new methods to skating now that he has won a World championship. He announced his retirement from competitive skating on September 10, 2008. “It has been a privilege to represent Canada throughout the globe, and I am extremely proud of my achievements as a competitive figure skater,” Buttle said, preserving his eligibility and leaving the door open for a return to Olympic sport in the future. “Throughout my career, I've received so much support—I'll be forever thankful to my fans, coaches, and, of course, my family.” Buttle's performing abilities and willingness to try new choreography have been developed over the course of five years with Stars on Ice Canada. Every night, audiences demand the best from the skaters, and he has learned to satisfy those expectations. Of course, they provided him with plenty of incentive by giving him standing ovations before he even skated in honor of his outstanding achievements. His current calendar includes Holiday Festival on Ice and Disson Skating events, Improv Ice, Smokey Robinson Tribute on Ice, and Holiday Celebration on Ice throughout Canada and the United States. His dedication to his sport isn't limited to his own skating. The members of the Canadian national team picked him as their captain in June 2006. He also served on the Skate Canada Officials Advisory Committee as an athlete representative. “Jeff has been a leader and an advocate for our sport and country over the years,” William Thompson, chief executive officer of Skate Canada, stated upon Buttle's retirement. He has embraced his role as a Canadian Champion, World Champion, and Olympian by serving as a role model for young Canadian skaters, and he plans to stay active with and support Skate Canada. We shall miss his unique combination of creativity and athleticism, and we wish him all the best in the future.” Buttle is also proud of his efforts to further his education. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto. He briefly put his studies on hold due to the pressures of his Olympic ambition, but he now wants to return to school in the near future. Buttle gladly donates his skating fame to charitable organizations. He has skated in a number of charity galas and has also volunteered with World Vision Canada. On and off the ice, he's been recognized for his sense of flair. The Mayor of Sudbury, Ontario, awarded him with a plaque in August 2008 in honor of his achievements. He was awarded one of the "Ten Most Beautiful People in Figure Skating" by International Figure Skating magazine in 2002. He's ready to let his imagination flow now that he's focused on the performing side of the sport. Buttle explained, “Whenever I approached a season, I was very meticulous in choosing music that had never been done before.” “I can now be more abstract in my music selections as a performer.”
