Hans-Peter Plag studied mathematics and geophysics in Berlin after working as a carpenter for a while and received his Ph.D. in Natural Sciences from the Free University of Berlin in 1988. He was the director of a geodynamics research group at the University of Kiel, Germany, from 1988 until 1997.
He was also involved in environmental activities at the time and subsequently became a member of the Green Party. He was the primary author of a waste reduction and recycling idea that resulted in a large decrease in the trash and an increase in recycling, among other things.
