Dule Hill, who was born to Jamaican parents in Orange, New Jersey, began studying tap dance at a young age. He had a cameo appearance in the musical The Tap Dance Kid. In 1993, during his final year of high school, he landed his first film part in Sugar Hill.

During his undergraduate years, he was cast in a leading part in the Broadway production Bring In Da' Noise, Bring In Da' Funk. Hill was cast as Charlie Young, President Josiah Bartlet's bodyguard, in The West Wing in 1999.
