The Ethiopian-American novelist Dinaw Mengestu uses his novels and essays to investigate migration alongside identity and displacement and the human quest to find belonging. After leaving Ethiopia as a child for the United States Dinaw Mengestu developed his writing through the experience of immigration. He finished his Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing at Columbia University to develop his writing style.
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears brought Dinaw Mengestu widespread praise and the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction after it became his debut published work. His literary career continued with How to Read the Air and All Our Names which examine diaspora and memory and cultural identity in a deeper way to reach worldwide readership.
