The Ethiopian-American novelist Dinaw Mengestu uses his novels and essays to investigate migration alongside identity and displacement and the human quest to find belonging. After leaving Ethiopia as a child for the United States Dinaw Mengestu developed his writing through the experience of immigration. He finished his Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing at Columbia University to develop his writing style.
