The American Islamic Congress (AIC), a nonprofit organization founded in the wake of the September 11 attacks to promote civil rights in the Muslim world and foster interfaith understanding, is led by Ms. Al-Suwaij, who is also one of its co-founders. Al-Suwaij was born in 1971 in Basra, Iraq. She fled to the United States after taking part in the unsuccessful 1991 uprising against Saddam Hussein (an experience she described in a memoir for The New Republic). She is a Hashemite and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. She is the granddaughter of the foremost cleric in Basra. Al-Suwaij describes the blend of traditional and contemporary elements in her own personal religious views. Al-Suwaij oversees initiatives promoting religious diversity and tolerance at mosques, churches, synagogues, universities, and high schools. She has created lesson plans for the classroom, collaborates with the Anti-Defamation League, and sits on the Connecticut Advisory Board for Hate Crimes. She has been designated an Ambassador for Peace by the Interreligious Federation for World Peace and is on the board of the George Mason University Center for World Religions Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution.
