Social worker and occupational therapist Yvonne van Amerongen. Prior to beginning her employment at the nursing home Hogewey in 1983, she held positions in a hospital for psychiatric illnesses and a rehabilitation facility.
When the management group began considering the future of care for persons with severe dementia in 1992, she was the care manager of the conventional nursing home Hogewey. This concept served as the inspiration for the 1993 construction of the De Hogeweyk communal village, which presently includes 23 homes for more than 150 dementia-affected elders.
