Yuna Biography

Malaysian singer-songwriter and entrepreneur Yunalis Mat Zara'ai is better known by her stage name, Yuna. She was reared in Kedah and started creating songs at the age of 14. She quickly taught herself how to play the guitar, and in 2006, in search of a creative outlet, while enrolled in law school, she gave her first performance in front of an audience. On her MySpace profile, Yuna made her music available, and more than one million people played it. Her music was discovered by the Indie-Pop label/management firm thanks to her internet popularity, and at the beginning of 2011, she signed with the Fader label. With the assistance of the musicians Pa'an on guitar, Efry Arwis on bass, Adib Azfar on drums (and later Adil Ali), Yuna recorded her debut album in Malaysia in 2008 with a self-titled EP that garnered five nominations for Malaysian Music Awards (the Malaysian equivalent of the Grammy). She received four awards, including those for Best New Artist and Best Song (for the breakout hit Dan Sebenarnya). Two years later, The Decorate (EP) was published (and was released stateside in the spring of 2011). Rocket, a viral smash that received praise from Billboard magazine, KEXP, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, and SPIN's Eight Bands You Need to Hear Now, was one of Decorate's songs. Yuna was recognized as one of MTV Iggy's Best New Bands in the World in 2011, and she celebrated by performing in the famed MTV Studios.
