Yakov Smirnoff relocated to Los Angeles in order to advance his profession as a stand-up comedian. He shared a room with budding comedians Thomas F. Wilson and Andrew Dice Clay. He frequently performed at the Comedy Store, a well-known L.A. club. A modest appearance in the 1984 movie Moscow on the Hudson gave Smirnoff, who had already achieved some degree of recognition, his big break. On the set, he assisted Robin Williams, who played the lead, with his Russian speech. He made multiple appearances on the sitcom Night Court as Yakov Korolenko, and he also made several appearances as a guest and comic on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
