David Mamet, a writer-director, is largely responsible for William H. Macy's professional success. When Macy relocated to Goddard College in Vermont, where Mamet lectured, from where she had been studying veterinary medicine in West Virginia, the two came into contact. In the 1980s, Macy moved to New York, where he occasionally won TV guest roles but really made his mark off-Broadway by portraying a variety of miserable and unfortunate individuals. He also kept up their productive partnership. Ironically, though, his friend had little to do with Macy's success in Hollywood. In Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 film Fargo, Macy played a desperate auto salesman who foolishly employs two goons to abduct his wife. Macy employed his hangdog demeanor to comic advantage and rightly received an Oscar nomination for the role. He also became well-known because of recurrent parts on the TV shows ER and Sports Night, in which he appeared with his real-life wife Felicity Huffman. For the Showtime dramedy series Shameless in 2010, Macy and ER producer John Wells collaborated once more on the role of an alcoholic father.
