On the east side of Kansas City, Missouri, where Wesley Hamilton was raised, it was difficult for a young African American man to find opportunities off the beaten path. By the time he was 16 years old, he had grown to be difficult for his mother to manage (which was usual for youngsters in his area) and had moved out on his own. He became a father to his daughter Nevaeh by the age of 22. Wes was a single parent working long hours at an auto finance company two years after the incident, only 5-foot-4 and 230 pounds, and he was obscenely overweight. He had just recently gained custody of his then 2-year-old daughter. Nevertheless, only five days after Wes celebrated his 24th birthday (in January 2012), his entire life underwent a profound transformation. Wes was shot many times while he was walking back to his car, with one bullet going through his chest and splitting a rib. The other partially penetrated his torso, severing his spine and paralyzing him below the belly. The gunman was a stranger to him. Wes spent the next three years healing, spending two of those years battling the severe, passionate misery that resulted from his belief that his life would always be plagued by medications, medical procedures, and obstacles.
