Wes Jackson established and served as chair of one of the first ecological research programs in the country at California State University-Sacramento after earning a BA in science from Kansas Wesleyan University, an MA in plant science from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in hereditary qualities from North Carolina State University.
Jackson made the decision to quit academia at that moment and return to Kansas, where in 1976 he founded the non-profit organization The Land Institute. Up until he left in 2016, he presided over The Land Institute.
