Koenig, who was bitten by the acting bug as a kid, studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where he worked with individual actors James Caan, Elizabeth Ashley, and Dabney Coleman.

His theatrical career spans 30 years, including appearances in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and countless other cities. In the late 1950s and mid-1960s, he appeared in various plays and network series, including the Mr. Novak arrangement, and even presented and scored his own component picture, I Wish I May, in 1967.
