Rhames spent his upbringing in Harlem, Manhattan. Ving, a competent understudy, enrolled at the New York High School of Performing Arts, where he discovered his love for acting. After high school, he attended the Juilliard Drama School and began his career in New York theater. He shared a room with individual on-screen persona Stanley Tucci at Juilliard.
In 1984, he made his Broadway debut in the play The Winter Boys. Ving continued to rise to prominence via his work in plays. He sought work as a supporting actor and was cast as Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction (1994).
