Rhames spent his upbringing in Harlem, Manhattan. Ving, a competent understudy, enrolled at the New York High School of Performing Arts, where he discovered his love for acting. After high school, he attended the Juilliard Drama School and began his career in New York theater. He shared a room with individual on-screen persona Stanley Tucci at Juilliard. In 1984, he made his Broadway debut in the play The Winter Boys. Ving continued to rise to prominence via his work in plays. He sought work as a supporting actor and was cast as Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction (1994). Soon after, Rhames was cast alongside Tom Cruise as ace PC programmer Luther Stickell in Brian de Palma's Mission: Impossible (1996). With great showings in both of these immensely mainstream works, his face was no longer visible to moviegoers, and job offers began to flood in more regularly. Rhames received a Golden Globe for outstanding on-screen character in a TV miniseries in 1998 for his performance in HBO's Don King: Only in America. At the memorial ceremony, Rhames paid tribute to the late Jack Lemmon, stating, "I believe that being a craftsman is linked with giving, and I'd prefer to offer this to you." Lemmon was clearly touched by the motion, as was the VIP audience, who applauded him enthusiastically. Lemmon, who unsuccessfully sought to return the honor to Rhames, claimed it was "perhaps the finest second I've ever known in my life." The Hollywood Foreign Press Association afterwards announced that a copy grant will be arranged for Rhames.
