At age 17, Kilmer was the youngest understudy allowed to the Drama office at the Juilliard School of Performing Arts, where he completed his formal training. Kilmer received his first acting role in the 1984 satire Top Secret after spending some time idealizing his acting prowess on New York stage productions of How It All Began. The years that followed saw a mix of television specials and highlight films, including 1986's Top Gun and 1988's Willow.
