An aspiring kid star, Tori Kelly discovered how to follow her own inspiration and utilize the Internet to share her songs with her followers. Kelly was influenced by pop and R&B artists like Jeff Buckley, Lauryn Hill, and Jill Scott while she grew up listening to church music.
She participated in America's Most Talented Kids in 2004 and won in her first round before moving on to the finals. Kelly tried out for American Idol but didn't make it to the final 24 so she adopted a new strategy. She had been studying the guitar and started writing original songs, which she then recorded on her computer.
