She participated in America's Most Talented Kids in 2004 and won in her first round before moving on to the finals. Kelly tried out for American Idol but didn't make it to the final 24 so she adopted a new strategy. She had been studying the guitar and started writing original songs, which she then recorded on her computer. When Kelly digitally released the album Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly, which she had self-recorded and on which she played the majority of the instruments, she demonstrated that there were paying customers among her new fan base.
