has been voted the 1970 Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year for Oregon high school students after being selected as an all-state pick in basketball, football, and track and field at Central Linn High School.

After that, he went to the University of Oregon, where he competed in track and field under the direction of Bill Bowerman, a co-founder of Nike, and once held the pole vault record there. He majored in architecture at the University of Oregon School of Architecture, where he received a B.Arch degree.

He also made the graphics for the basketball floor at the University of Oregon's Matthew Knight Arena, which debuted in 2011.

Tobie Hatfield, the younger brother of Hatfield, started working at Nike as a senior engineer in 1990. For Gran Turismo 6 in 2013, Hatfield created concept cars for the Nike and Jordan brands. Jordan Air Lead designer of the Air Jordans III through XV, XX, and XX3 was Tinker Hatfield.

Hatfield also contributed to the design of the Air Jordan xx8 and 2010 models. He was also the principal designer for the hugely well-liked custom known as "Jay Holiday."
