The Doobie Brothers, one of the most well-known California pop/rock bands of the 1970s, developed from a mellow post-hippie boogie band to a slick pop band with soul influences by the end of the decade. Along the way, the group amassed several gold and platinum records in the U.S. They also had several radio songs, including China Grove and Listen to the Music Black Water. The Doobie Brothers' beginnings may be traced back to Pud, a brief-lived Californian country-rock outfit similar to Moby Grape that featured drummer John Hartman and guitarist Tom Johnston. They started a jam session with guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren in 1969 after Pud passed away. The foursome ultimately decided to establish a band and took the moniker "Doobie Brothers" from a slang word for marijuana. The Doobies quickly developed a devoted fan base throughout Southern California, particularly among Hell's Angels, and in 1970 they were contracted to Warner Bros. The band's self-titled debut, released in 1971, received little attention. Tiran Porter replaced Shogren after its release, and the band acquired Michael Hossack as a second drummer for Toulouse Street in 1972. The group's success came thanks to the tracks Listen to the Music and Jesus Is Just Alright. In addition, long Train Runnin' and China Grove, two Top Ten hits that sprang from the even more popular The Captain and Me, were produced.
