Terry Virts Biography

Terry Virts, an astronaut, was raised outside Baltimore in Columbia, Maryland. Being an only kid, he had known from reading his first book on the Apollo missions in kindergarten that he wanted to be an astronaut. He continued to do well in school, graduating with a master's in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1997 and a bachelor of science in mathematics (with a minor in French) from the United States Air Force Academy in 1989. Virts participated in an exchange program at the École de l'Air in 1988 as a student at the Air Force Academy. Virts received his pilot's license and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After completing his training, he was sent to the 22nd Fighter Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany and the 36th Fighter Squadron at Osan Air Base in the Republic of Korea. At Edwards Air Force Base in California, Virts was chosen for test pilot school in 1997. Since then, he has flown more than 4,500 hours in more than 40 different types of aircraft. Terry and two other astronauts were aboard the Soyuz TMA-15M as it took out from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on November 23, 2014. After the renowned Spock actor Leonard Nimoy passed away on February 28, 2015, Terry posted a picture from the International Space Station showing his Vulcan greeting, "Live long and prosper," as the ISS passed over Boston, where Nimoy was born. As the leader of Expedition 43, Virts took control of the International Space Station in March 2015. He has been in the International Space Station for more than 200 days. A BEAUTIFUL PLANET, a new IMAX picture that debuted in April 2016, has Terry as one of its stars. With its beautiful depiction of Earth from space, this movie offers a new insight into our planet and cosmos. The film, which Terry shot from the International Space Station, was produced in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and showed breathtaking imagery of our gorgeous blue planet and the consequences humans have had through time (ISS). Terry has taken more images from space than anybody else, giving him a unique view of the planet.
