
Rita Hartney was born in a cabin at the mouth of a coal mine in Lithgow. She made her first public appearance just one hour after birth when her father introduced her to his workmates around a campfire. Hartney joined a Direct Selling organization in the 1960s, eventually buying the company in the 1970s and selling it in the 1980s.
In 1979, she received a Nothing's Impossible award from astronaut Neil Armstrong for her innovative party plan, Vogue Party Time. In 1983, Rita became the National President of Salespeople with a Purpose. She introduced the confidence-boosting program "I'm Special" to year 11 students, adapting and taking the program to Bendigo Prison and the Office of Corrections in Victoria.
