Susan Stamberg, a broadcast journalist with widespread recognition, is a special reporter for NPR. Stamberg has won every significant award in the broadcasting industry and was the first woman to headline a national nightly news program. The Radio Hall of Fame and the Broadcasting Hall of Fame have inducted her. Stamberg, a "founding mother" of NPR, has worked with the organization since its foundation in 1971. For 14 years, starting in 1972, Stamberg co-hosted All Things Considered, an award-winning news program on NPR. She later served as the anchor of Weekend Edition Sunday and currently contributes cultural news for Morning Edition and Weekend Edition Saturday. Stamberg, one of the most well-liked hosts on public radio, is renowned for her kind demeanor, sharp mind, and talent for uncovering compelling stories. The author E.L. Doctorow described her interviewing as "fresh," "warm, down-to-earth," and "the closest thing to an enlightened humanist on the radio." She has conducted several interviews with Luciano Pavarotti, Laura Bush, Billy Crystal, Rosa Parks, Dave Brubeck, and Billy Crystal. Before joining NPR, she worked as a producer, the program director, and the general manager of NPR Member Station WAMU-FM/Washington, DC. In addition to co-editing a third book, Stamberg is the author of two others. Talk: Susan Stamberg Considers All Things, a series on NPR, details her 20 years there. Every Night at Five: Susan Stamberg's All Things Considered Book, her debut book, was released by Pantheon in 1982. The Wedding Cake in the Middle of the Road, which W. W. Norton released in 1992, was also co-edited by Stamberg. A few pieces in that book were written by Stamberg for Weekend Edition Sunday. She has also received the Armstrong and duPont Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Golden Anniversary Director's Award from The Ohio State University, and the Distinguished Broadcaster Award from the American Women in Radio and Television in addition to her inductions into the Hall of Fame. Stamberg is a native of New York City who graduated from Barnard College with a bachelor's degree. He has also received various honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Humane Letters from Dartmouth College. She is a fellow at Yale University's Silliman College. She has served on the boards of the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and the PEN/Faulkner Fiction Award Foundation. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has recognized her as a fellow. Stamberg has moderated three Fred Rogers television specials for adults, presented several PBS series and acted as a pundit, guest, or co-host on several commercial TV shows. He has also performed as a narrator with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. An American Daughter by Wendy Wasserstein featured her voice on Broadway. Louis Stamberg, her late husband, worked for the State Department's international development office for much of his career. Josh Stamberg, her actor son, has roles in several plays, movies, and television shows.
