Stuart Dybek is a writer and artist who was born in Chicago's South Side in 1942. He attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop and Loyola University in Chicago. His poem collections include Streets in Their Own Ink (1979) and Brass Knuckles (1979). (2004).

His fictional works, such as the short story collections Childhood and Other Neighborhoods (1980) and The Coast of Chicago (1990), as well as the novel-in-stories I Sailed with Magellan (2003), have caused some critics to compare him to American literary giants Sherwood Anderson and Ernest Hemingway.
