Steven Buscemi grew up in Brooklyn, where his first audience was his family. After graduating from Valley Stream High School on Long Island, Buscemi took a Civil Service exam and worked for a period at various contract jobs, hoping that his name might come up for a position with the FDNY.
In any event, Buscemi had the courage to enroll in acting school at Manhattan's prestigious Lee Strasberg Institute in 1977. Following a year of study in Manhattan, he became acquainted with the affluent East Village performing expressions scene. He began performing stand-up parodies and developing connections with midtown theatrical networks.
