Even in the metropolitan wilds of Brooklyn, Jean-Philip Grobler as St. Lucia may be the only one. St. Lucia grew up performing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School in Johannesberg, South Africa.

When the choir wasn't touring Japan, Australia, Europe, and other places, they lived in a mountain enclave in South Africa, where they studied everything from Bach to minimalist opera. There is no greater training for a young musician. However, St Lucia's musical heart was elsewhere, and South Africa was full of other rhythms.

My mum claims I used to sing along to Michael Jackson he says - an unremarkable narrative till he adds when I was an infant. As a young adolescent, he began to feel that he'd had his fill of classical music, and discovering the raw emotionality of pop music seemed like a revelation.

He eventually left South Africa's creative tiny pond for England, where he studied music in Liverpool for three years. St. Lucia's voyage finished in New York City, where he began working on the music that would eventually become his self-titled first release on Neon Gold. St.

Lucia's electronic pop has a compelling atmospheric aspect, with the musician's globe travels and history of secret hideaways simply passing on to the audience through his dreamy shimmering synthesizers.
