Sonia Nassery Cole was born in Afghanistan but moved to the United States as a youngster during the Soviet takeover in 1979. From her new home in the U.S., she organized relief and publicity initiatives for her homeland, even visiting with President Reagan in the White House. She has been a constant in the Afghan humanitarian effort since then.
She established the Afghanistan World Foundation in 2002 to improve education, health care, and development in Afghanistan, as well as to provide social possibilities for Afghan women and children. "The Bread Winner," her first short film, was directed when she was working with AWF in Afghanistan.
