Shoshana Nyree Johnson was born in the Republic of Panama and immigrated to the United States as a kid with her family. She did not want to be a second-generation Army veteran, but she enrolled a JROTC cadet in 1991 and joined the U.S. Army in September 1998 while completing classes at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Shoshana was in a convoy that was attacked in the city of an-Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She and five other troops were caught and held as prisoners of war, generating international headlines.
