The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund's president and director-counsel is Sherrilyn Ifill (LDF). She is on sabbatical from the University of Maryland School of Law, where she has taught since 1993 and litigated and advised on civil rights matters. Ifill was previously an assistant counsel at LDF, where she litigated voting rights issues such as Houston Lawyers' Association v.

Attorney General of Texas under the Voting Rights Act. She is the author of On the Courthouse Lawn: Confronting Lynching's Legacy in the Twenty-First Century and the former board chair of Open Society Foundations' US Programs.
