Selling Money, about his years as an international banker, and The Outlaw Bank, about the $20 billion BCCI bank scam, are among S.C. (Sam) Gwynne's three novels. Outlaw Bank was selected as one of the Top Ten Books of the Year by Business Week magazine. His most recent book, Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, America's Most Powerful Indian Tribe, spent four months in the top ten best-seller list of the New York Times. Gwynne began her career as a senior journalist at the Dallas Morning News in 2010. Among other topics, he has written biographies of baseball player Josh Hamilton and former Whitewater prosecutor Ken Starr. Sam mostly wrote for Texas Monthly from 2000 until 2010. Cover stories on White House adviser Karl Rove, NASA, Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick, and the King Ranch were among his accomplishments. Dell Computer, Vice President Dick Cheney, Halliburton, and a week-long solo camping expedition in Big Bend are among the themes of his feature pieces. His tale on Houston surgeon Eric Scheffey, who was killed in 2005, was included in The Best American Crime Writing 2006. He was named "Writer of the Year" by the National City and Regional Magazine Award in 2008. Gwynne spent 12 years at Time magazine as a correspondent, bureau chief, national correspondent, and senior editor before joining Texas Monthly. He contributed more than 200 pieces to Time magazine, including six cover stories. To report stories, he traveled across the United States as well as to England, Austria, France, Belgium, Spain, and Russia. For his work at Time, he earned several honors, including a National Headliners Award for his coverage of the Columbine High School massacres. He also received the Gerald Loeb Award for Business Writing, the Jack Anderson Award for Best Investigative Reporter, and the John Hancock Award for Distinguished Financial Writing. He's also contributed to the New York Times, Harper's, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, California Magazine, the Boston Globe, and a number of other magazines. He was the editor-in-chief of California Business magazine, which was at the time the country's largest regional business publication. Gwynne worked as a French instructor and an international banker before becoming a journalist. Gwynne served as President of the Board of Directors of Caritas of Austin from 2007 to 2008, one of the city's main nonprofits that help those in need with food, rent and utility payments, and counseling. He has also served as a Lecturer at the University of Texas School of Journalism, where he taught advanced reporting and feature-writing.
