Sasha Luccioni Biography

Sasha Luccioni serves as a top expert who brings artificial intelligence together with climate science to study AI technology environmental effects. She leads Hugging Face as Climate Lead and Research Scientist to establish sustainable development practices for machine learning technology.

Sasha Luccioni came into the world in the Ukrainian SSR during 1990. After completing her language science bachelor's degree at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle she pursued her Master of Science in cognitive science at École normale supérieure in Paris. She completed her Ph.D. degree in cognitive computing at Université du Québec à Montréal in 2018.  

Throughout her career Luccioni has worked between academic institutions and industrial organizations. She previously worked at Nuance Communications and Morgan Stanley's AI/ML Center of Excellence where she focused on natural language processing and explainable AI. Through her postdoctoral research at Université de Montréal and Mila with Yoshua Bengio she developed "This Climate Does Not Exist" which applies generative adversarial networks to display climate change effects.

Luccioni holds dual positions as a member of Climate Change AI while being a co-founder of the organization which applies machine learning solutions to address climate-related problems. She supports organizations through her board membership of Women in Machine Learning while providing advisory services to the OECD and the United Nations and the NeurIPS conference to advance responsible AI practices.  

Her work receives worldwide acclaim. Time Magazine included her in its 2024 list of the 100 most influential people in AI alongside a BBC 100 Women recognition. Through her research she revealed the carbon emissions produced by AI models starting with the BLOOM language model which received coverage in MIT Technology Review and WIRED publications.
