In the Madhya Pradesh city of Khandwa, Saroo Brierley was born. When he was young, his father abandoned his mother, plunging the family into poverty. His mother worked in the construction industry to support herself and her children but frequently didn't have enough money to cover their needs.
At age 5, Saroo and his older siblings Guddu and Kallu began pleading for food and money at the train station. Guddu occasionally picked up jobs sweeping the floors of railway cars. One evening, Guddu declared he would travel 70 kilometers south on the railway from Khandwa to Burhanpur. Saroo asked if he might join them as well. Guddu agreed.
