Saroo Brierley Biography

In the Madhya Pradesh city of Khandwa, Saroo Brierley was born. When he was young, his father abandoned his mother, plunging the family into poverty. His mother worked in the construction industry to support herself and her children but frequently didn't have enough money to cover their needs. At age 5, Saroo and his older siblings Guddu and Kallu began pleading for food and money at the train station. Guddu occasionally picked up jobs sweeping the floors of railway cars. One evening, Guddu declared he would travel 70 kilometers south on the railway from Khandwa to Burhanpur. Saroo asked if he might join them as well. Guddu agreed. Saroo was so exhausted when the train arrived in Burhanpur that he collapsed upon a stage chair. Guddu told his younger sibling to stop and promised to return instantly. When Guddu didn't come back, Saroo eventually started to become restless. When he spotted a train halted in the station, he assumed his sister was on board and climbed into a free carriage. He found that there was no access to the adjacent carriages. He dozed off because he thought his brother would want him to. The train was traveling through new countries when he stood up. The expedition continued as many hours passed. The train would sometimes stop at little stops, but Saroo could not find a way out. In the end, Saroo was able to escape from jail, and the expedition came to an end in Kolkata's enormous Howrah railroad station. Saroo wasn't familiar with it then, although he was roughly 1500 kilometers from his previous area.
