To quantify how light scattering and absorption by particles impact climate, Sarah took part in field missions measuring aerosol optical characteristics while a graduate student and postdoctoral researcher (SEAS, LINC, INDOEX, ACE-Asia). Her research then concentrated on how black carbon (soot) aerosols affect the climate.
First, she worked on developing a tool to measure light-absorbing particles in snow samples with colleagues at UW. The group then surveyed the amount of black carbon in snow across the Arctic, northern China, and central North America. The generated data collection is used to evaluate and enhance climate model projections of black carbon's influence on the climate.
