When it came to resisting Russian aggression, gaining the release of political prisoners, and assisting in the organization of international responses to the North Korean nuclear threat, the immense refugee crisis, and the development of ISIS, Ambassador Power was a key player at the U.N.

Ambassador Power has been recognized as one of Foreign Policy's "Top 100 Global Thinkers" and TIME magazine's "100 Most Important People." Forbes has called her "a formidable campaigner for U.S.

foreign policy as well as human rights and democracy." Ambassador Power formerly served as the Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She was the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy's first executive director.

The Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award were given to her book "A Problem From Hell:" America in the Age of Genocide in 2003. It was hailed as "nothing less than a classic of contemporary journalism," according to The New Republic. A furious, innovative, passionately practical, and unquestionably necessary book.

Also, she co-edited The Unquiet American: Richard Holbrooke in the World and penned the New York Times bestseller Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Battle to Save the World (2008), which served as the inspiration for the acclaimed HBO documentary, "Sergio" (2011).

At the beginning of her career, Ambassador Power worked as a journalist, covering stories from Bosnia, East Timor, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zimbabwe.

She also wrote a regular column for TIME and regularly contributed to The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and The Atlantic, which featured her National Magazine Award-winning piece "Bystanders to Genocide." She left Ireland at the age of nine and moved to the U.S.

She went to high school in Atlanta, Georgia, graduated from Yale University with a B.A., and Harvard Law School with a J.D. She has two young children, ages 7 and 4, and she is married to Harvard Law Professor Cass Sunstein, so multitasking has been a big part of her time at the U.N.
