Richard Nathan Haass is a diplomat from the United States. He was Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State and a close advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell before becoming president of the Council on Foreign Relations in July 2003.
Haass has been the US Coordinator for the Future of Afghanistan since the Senate accepted him as an ambassadorial nominee. He took over as Special Envoy for Northern Ireland from George J. Mitchell to aid the peace process in Northern Ireland, for which he won the State Department's Distinguished Service Award.
