She has published critical articles on the subject recently, such as Social Entrepreneurship: The Case for Definition (with Roger Martin) in Stanford Social Innovation Review; book chapters on Building the Field of Social Entrepreneurship in Philanthropy in the 21st Century and Wayfinding Without a Compass - Philanthropy's Changing Landscape and Its Implications for Social Entrepreneurs in Social Entrepreneurship - New Models of Sustainable Social Change; and the forward to the book Social Entrepreneurship: New Models of Sustainable the Phoenix Decade, etc.).

Sally often gives presentations in her area, most notably at TEDWomen, the Commonwealth Club of California, and the University of Southern California Center for Philanthropy and Public Policy's Distinguished Speaker Series. Sally was the first Executive Director of the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose before joining the Skoll Foundation, which she led from creation to widespread acclaim.

In 2001, the White House gave the museum the National Prize for Museum Service. Sally received her B.A. in English from Scripps College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and her M.A. in literature from the Claremont Graduate School.

Sally has held adjunct professor posts at Hamilton College and Utica College of Syracuse University, where she also served as the Writing Center's co-director. She handled the release of reference materials in consumer and environmental affairs while serving as managing editor for the Center for California Public Affairs.

Sally currently holds positions on the Children's Discovery Museum boards, Partners for Sustainable Development, the Oracle Education Foundation, the Skoll Foundation, the Skoll Global Threats Fund, The Elders, and the John Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities. She also sits on the advisory boards of these organizations.

Sally has also served on the boards of the American Association of Museums, the American Leadership Forum, the Association of Youth Museums, and Women and Philanthropy, among others.

For her work establishing and guiding Silicon Valley, Sally has been honored with the John Gardner Leadership Award from the American Leadership Forum, inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame, and named one of the "Millennium 100" by the San Jose Mercury News.
