Ross Gay Biography

Ross Gay is the author of three books: Against Which, Bringing the Shovel Down, and Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry in 2015 and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award in 2016. Catalog was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award and was a nominee for the 2015 National Book Award in Poetry, the Ohioana Book Award, the Balcones Poetry Prize, and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award. Ross is the co-author of the chapbook Lace and Pyrite: Letters from Two Gardens with Aimee Nezhukumatathil, as well as the chapbook River with Richard Wehrenberg, Jr. He co-founded the online sports magazine Some Call it Ballin' alongside Karissa Chen and Patrick Rosal, and he also works as an editor for the chapbook presses Q Avenue and Ledge Mule Press. Ross is a founding board member of the Bloomington Community Orchard, a non-profit that provides free fruit to anybody who wants it. Cave Canem, the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, and the Guggenheim Foundation have all given him fellowships. Ross is an Indiana University professor.
