From 1962 to 1964, he attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, before beginning a career in journalism. Kessler is a father of two children. Kessler began his career as a reporter for the Worcester Telegram in 1964, then worked for the Boston Herald for three years as an investigative reporter and editorial writer.
