She grew up in a predominantly white, middle-class neighborhood in the suburbs. Williams studied East Asian Studies at Yale University and later trained as a Zen priest under the guidance of Zen teacher Taizan Maezumi Roshi.

Williams is the author of several books, including "Being Black: Zen and the Art of Living with Fearlessness and Grace," which explores the intersection of Zen Buddhism and racial justice.
