Rebecca Onie had an epiphany in 1996, as a sophomore in college, that the US healthcare system was not set up to identify or treat the socioeconomic difficulties that contribute to poor health, and that healthcare personnel were not given skills to address fundamental concerns like nutrition and shelter.
She co-founded Health Leads, a program that helps low-income patients and their families get food, heat, and other essential services they need to be healthy, while still a sophomore.
