Rebecca Onie Biography

Rebecca Onie had an epiphany in 1996, as a sophomore in college, that the US healthcare system was not set up to identify or treat the socioeconomic difficulties that contribute to poor health, and that healthcare personnel were not given skills to address fundamental concerns like nutrition and shelter. She co-founded Health Leads, a program that helps low-income patients and their families get food, heat, and other essential services they need to be healthy, while still a sophomore. With the added insight that student volunteers might be recruited and groomed into an elite squad, similar to a college sports team, she was able to find the people and abilities required to carry out such a bold proposal. It has expanded considerably since then, currently operating in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, New York, Providence, and Washington, DC, and assisting over 8,800 people in the previous year.
