In 1948, an American academic specializing in race, class, and gender known as Patricia Hill Collins was born. She is the former head of the Department of African-American Studies at the University of Cincinnati, a past President of the American Sociological Association and a Prominent University Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Collins was recognized as the first African-American woman to hold the position of 100th president of the ASA. Her book Black Feminist Thought, originally published in 1990 brought her national attention.
